After 3 years we finally made it to Cayman! We had a mixed bag of diving talent from AOW’s - Jr. Dive Masters, to some in between. Over half of the Troop 40348 were able to make it, with the exception of one of our troop leaders, who sadly tested positive the day before the trip.

The weather and water were incredible, with clear blue skies and crystal clear water, and out of a total of 21 dives most of us made 19 with (Octopus) clocking the most with 20.

From Sunset House Resort, we were able to scuba dive into open water from the sea pool, but mostly we took the dive boats out twice in the morning and one at night while occasionally in the afternoons.

We saw some incredible marine life; nudibranchs, dolphin fish, parrot fish, sharks, octopus, and the tarpon.

However there was one dive which I think we’ll all agree was disappointing, and that was Stingray City. We were expecting to see hundreds of rays, but instead we only found one. Troop leaders thought maybe this was due to covid, because the Divers were not feeding them anymore. Also, a few of our night dives were not so fun because we didn’t really see much.

The Wrecks we saw were the Kittiwake and the Nicholson, offering some of us first time opportunities to try out some new skills.

On this trip we also got to do some fun land activities; eat ice-cream at the best place in town, walk on 7 Mile Beach, visit the Rum Factory and the amazing Turtle Center.

However, I have to also mention the two big moments that also symbolize this trip. The first was when we were all eating lunch and then suddenly a huge coconut fell inches away from our table. We spent the rest of lunch smashing it up so that we could get the juice.

The second was when Silly Starfish and Octopus were stung several times by a small school of Jellyfish causing both Divers to come up in big red welts and a rash. This resulted in a big debate on whether the Jellyfish were Box Jellies or another kind.

But despite the ‘dangers!’ We all had a lot of fun and came away with some great photos, lifelong memories and stronger friendships. I would highly recommend the Troop’s International Dive Trip. It’s not only a way to clock up your dive tally, it’s also the best way to bond with other Troop members and test your skills in water you can actually see in!
